Despite national attention to a string of police killings of unarmed Black people over the past several months, a recent New York Times/CBS News poll found more than half of White Americans say race does not play a factor in police use of deadly force.
Additional research shows:
Almost half of White Americans say recent killings of Black men are isolated incidents and not part of a broader pattern;
At least three out of four Whites believe that Blacks have the same opportunity for jobs, education, and housing as they do; and
Over 70 percent of all millennials think that never considering race would improve society.
But even as we cling to this “post-racial” ideal and claim we’re “colorblind,” nine in ten Whites and nearly half of Blacks who take the Implicit Association Test (IAT) find they are biased against Black people.
IT’S TIME FOR AMERICA TO GET REAL WITH ITSELF ON RACE.
“Check Your Bias” is a campaign designed by Active Voices to move our country to a more honest place on race by:
Challenging people to examine their own biases and to learn how their biases hurt others;
Stopping mainstream media from perpetuating racially biased images of people of color.
Encouraging people of color to tell their own stories and create their own media to challenge stereotypical mainstream narratives.
